Flora Negra AKA Flo

We've named most of our females for flowers and our males for trees. The name of each flower or tree has a meaning, which we pass along to you here. Black Flower
ARI#: 827266
DOB: 06/06/01
Color: True Black
Category: Experienced Female
Breed: Huacaya

Flora’s a rock star…. that is a rock solid, steady star of a production dam.

She’s tall and stretchy, like her dam, with good spring of rib and body capacity. She pops out those babies without a hitch. In fact, she’s a “stealth birther.” The year that we did catch her birthing, she was very unhappy about us standing behind her and let us know that she had it all under control and to vacate the area, “Thank you very much!” Once those babies are on the ground, Flo is the most excellent and attentive of mothers. Her babies grow like wildflowers and have had birth weights from 17.5# to 20.5#.

And what beautiful babies they are! Take a look at pictures of some of her brood at their gallery on the right of the page. Experienced breeders know that the proof is in the progeny. Flora consistently produces babies that replicate the sire’s phenotype, while keeping her own wonderful, soft hand.

Take a good look at Flora's fiber statistics. In 2007, at age six, her true non-fading black fleece had an AFD of 24.8, SD of 5.6, a CV of 22.5 and a Comfort Factor of 85.3. This represents remarkable retained fineness over her tui stats of 23.5/4.9/20.8 and 7.6 > 30. Her fiber displays nice curvature 31.8, (crimp frequency) of low amplitude.

Flora’s parents are both silver and Flo has always thrown color, even bred to light males.

She’s rebred to Fandango’s Masterpiece Vermeer. This young macho has good density, with a follicle count of 52 follicles per square millimeter and a S/P ratio of 11 to 1. His first histogram was 1.8/3.9/20.7 with 1.1 > 30. He is full Peruvian with a star-studded pedigree. We love their 2008 son and would be very, very happy to see a female in 2009.

Flora has been a terrific production female for us, and we’ve been ambivalent about putting her on our sales list. We do so only because we have her true non-fading black daughter, whose fleece brought home a 3rd place spin-off ribbon from AWE.

We have kept her price reasonable because we recognize that many are only looking for “movie stars,” which quite frankly, Flora is not. However, for the discerning breeder who values dependability and can recognize “designer genes” in disguise and/or a new breeder searching for the ideal mentor, Flora is a true find.
